Before you start

  • A Traceten account. Sign up free if you don’t have one.
  • Access to your site’s HTML <head> tag (or equivalent in your platform).
New account? Signing up drops you straight into a short setup flow that walks these steps for you: add your site, copy the snippet, and it detects the first event on its own. Everything below is available inside that flow, including the per-platform instructions, so you never have to leave it. This page is the manual version, and the reference if you ever need to add a second site.

The setup flow

The flow has three steps. Adding your site is the one step you must complete. The install step has Finish later, which takes you to the dashboard and keeps the step waiting for you there, and connecting revenue has Skip for now.
1

Add your site

Enter the hostname you want to track (example.com, with no https:// and no trailing slash) and an optional display name.Your API key is shown once, here. Save it now; it cannot be retrieved later.
2

Install the snippet

Your snippet tag is shown with the site key already filled in. Below it, a tab for each platform (Snippet (HTML), Shopify, WordPress, Webflow, Next.js, Node, Python, Go) with the same steps as the install guides. This step watches for your first event and moves on by itself, so there is nothing to confirm. If nothing arrives, it tells you what to check and offers to look again.
3

Connect revenue (optional)

For Stripe, paste a restricted API key. Create one at Stripe → Developers → API keys with Write on Webhook Endpoints and Read on Account, Charges, Invoices, Checkout Sessions, Customers and Subscriptions. There is no redirect: you stay on this step and it completes in place. See the Stripe guide for the full walkthrough. For Shopify, create an app on your own store first, then paste its store domain, Client ID and Client Secret. There is no redirect there either. See the Shopify guide.Traffic attribution works fully without this. It is what adds the revenue half.

Coming back to it

The Finish setting up card on your Overview page picks up where you left off, and each step links back to the flow at that step. It stays until your first event actually arrives, so an empty dashboard always has an explanation next to it. Dismissing it with hides it until your next visit; Don’t show this again is the permanent one.

Manual steps

1

Create a site in the dashboard

In the dashboard, open the site switcher at the top of the page and choose Add site. Enter your domain (e.g. example.com) and click Create site. After saving, you’ll land on the install page. Your site key is shown in the snippet tag. It looks like ttid_7Rb4TrC1dTbnD8w3s1TS12 (ttid_ + 22 letters and digits, case-sensitive).Save your API key now. It is shown only once.
2

Copy your snippet tag

Your snippet tag is unique to your site:
The data-site attribute is your site key. Do not reuse the same key across multiple domains. data-cookie-domain is your own domain; it keeps one visitor as one visitor across your subdomains, but it’s off by default. The tag you copy won’t carry it until you confirm a value under Sites → Settings → Cookies. See Subdomains and cross-domain.
3

Paste it into your site's head

Add the tag anywhere inside your <head> block, before </head>:
The async attribute means the snippet never blocks page rendering. For platform-specific steps (Shopify, WordPress, Webflow, Next.js), see the install guide, or the matching tab on the site’s Install page in the dashboard, which shows the same steps with your key already filled in.
4

Verify the snippet is firing

Open your site in a new browser tab. Then go back to Sites → Install in the dashboard and check the Verify step. You should see a green indicator within 30 seconds of the first pageview. If you don’t see it, check the troubleshooting guide.

What happens next

Once the snippet is live, every pageview generates a detection event. Within a few hours of live traffic, you’ll start seeing AI source attribution in your dashboard.
